Jack wobbled his way into the emergency room of Rosewood Methodist hospital in such a weakened state that he crashed into a nearby gurney.

A nurse came running to him and, placing his arm over her shoulder, helped Jack to an unoccupied triage bed.

“Page Dr. Stevens,” she said to a colleague.

The assault had left Jack with a nasty gash, and the nurse noticed. She took out gauze pads from the desk drawer and pressed them to the back of his head. She asked for his name and what had happened.

As his head spun, Jack introduced himself as a detective, but chose not to disclose the specifics of his injury.

When Dr. Stevens arrived, he immediately prepared sutures and attended to the wound. Worrying about the possibility of a concussion, the doctor suggested a CT scan.

“No need for that,” Jack said, “I’ll be fine, just need to rest.”

“I’d like to keep you here overnight, just to be safe,” Dr. Stevens said.

Jack slowly pushed his body out of bed. “I hate hospitals. My wife died in one.” His face pruned as a stabbing sensation circulated in his head. “Any chance I can get something to help me sleep tonight?”

“Just stay for a few hours,” Dr. Stevens said. “I want to make sure the swelling doesn’t increase.”

Jack slogged toward the exit. “Not a chance, doc.”

“Wait!” Dr. Sevens said, and produced a prescription pad from the pocket of his white coat. He scribbled in it and tore off a sheet. “Here, take this. Should help you fall asleep. Take Tylenol or ibuprofen for the headache, but if it gets worse, or if you start feeling nauseous or lightheaded, call an ambulance right away.”

Jack examined the script. Zolpidem 10 mg. This had better be stronger than the over-the-counter stuff he’d gotten at a local pharmacy. “Appreciate it, doc.”

His head throbbed so intensely, he barely made it to the Jeep. He reached for Tylenol in the glove compartment and swallowed a few pills, then drove to the police station. The pounding still did not cease when he stepped out of the elevator on the second floor.

“Jack, are you okay?” Carl said, noticing the bandage wrapped around his head. “What happened to you?”

“I was attacked.”

“By whom? When?”

“I don’t know,” Jack said. “It happened outside of my home. Someone was there, watching me.”

There it was again. The shooting pain, which forced his gaze downward. Tylenol’s taking its sweet time.

Carl assisted him to his desk, and Jack couldn’t help noticing his dirty shoes. “What did you do, dance in a puddle of mud?”

“Sounds more fun,” Carl said, helping Jack to his chair. “We’ve been digging all day but came up empty. It will take us a while to cover the expanded search radius, but if there are remains to be found, we’ll uncover them.”

“I appreciate the help.”

“Don’t mention it, brother. But you look like hell. I say we get you to a hospital.”

“Just came from there. Don’t wanna go back. Here, help me up, I need to speak to L.T.”

Carl took Jack’s arm and propped him up.
